Technology and Mysticism

I used to impress people by telling them who was on the phone before they picked up. It was just a sense - a knack, if you will. Yet, I was more accurate than even I admitted.

No one is impressed these days with the advent of caller identification. Virtually everyone knows who is calling.

If I am clear, I can hear thoughts as well. The first that I acknowledged this was at a meditation retreat with my teacher. All was quiet and the pay phone in the mountain lodge began to ring.

Distractions are part of the process so I noted it and simply went on meditating.

"I wish someone would answer the damn phone," the voice said loudly in my head.

Shocked, I recognized Ken's voice. Yet, Ken had not spoken. I glanced at my teacher whose eyes had opened when my own had. He nodded and we both fell back into meditation. But I knew it - nothing was private after all.
